Artificial intelligence (AI) is not a maybe. It is already here.

And as more individuals and companies implement and use AI, many changes will take place.

Already, AI is affecting who gets hired, who still has a job, what tasks and functions employees will be doing, and how many employees companies need.

From customer service agents and translators to graphic designers and administrative assistants, AI is taking over work that once required thousands of people.

AI isn’t exactly replacing or eliminating jobs, careers, professions, or work.

AI is specifically replacing tasks and functions and reducing the number of employees companies need to perform them.

AI is also changing what employers require from workers.

The ‘World Economic Forum (WEF), Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Entry -Level Work: A Framework for Safeguarding and Reinvesting Early Career Pathways, Insight Report, June 2026,’ was a collaboration between WEF and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) led by Saadia Zahidi, managing director of WEF, and Peter Brown, global workforce leader of PwC.

The report highlighted that artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping work, especially at the entry level.

Globally, 37% of young workers are “… employed in occupations with medium to high exposure to AI-driven task change…”

This dynamic is observed in about seventy-five percent (75%) of young employees in Eastern Asia, approximately sixty-nine percent (69%) in North America, and sixty-three percent (63%) in Europe.

According to the report, the sectors with the highest to the lowest AI exposure are:

~ Financial and insurance activities

~ Information and communication

~ Professional, scientific and technical activities

~ Real estate activities

~ Education

~ Public administration and defence

~ Mining and quarrying

~ Human health and social activities

~ Manufacturing

~ Wholesale and retail trade

~ Other services and household activities

~ Arts, entertainment and recreation

~ Utilities and infrastructure

~ Construction

~ Transportation and storage

~ Agriculture, forestry and fishing

~ Accommodation and food service activities

~ Other and not elsewhere classified

So, which jobs are most exposed?

Here are the top 10 jobs that AI is replacing or reshaping right now:

Customer service representatives

Customer service may be one of the clearest examples of AI replacing human work.

AI chatbots can answer questions, process basic requests, check account information, and troubleshoot common problems.

WHAT IS HAPPENING

In New York, United States of America (USA), on February 27, 2024, Klarna, a fintech company, reported that its AI assistant powered by OpenAI was doing work equivalent to approximately seven hundred (700) full-time customer service agents.

Klarna also shared the following:

~ The AI assistant had 2.3 million conversations, about two-thirds of Klarna’s customer service chats.

~ Klarna’s average issue-resolution time dropped from eleven (11) minutes to just two (2) minutes.

~ The AI assistant is available in twenty-three (23) markets, 24/7, and can communicate in more than thirty-five (35) languages.

WHAT THIS MEANS:

This shows that human agents are not disappearing completely.

Instead, companies may need less people to handle routine customer interactions, while human workers deal with complaints, complex cases, and emotionally sensitive situations.

Data entry clerks

Data entry work is particularly vulnerable, as it involves repetitive, predictable, and rule-based tasks that AI has become better at performing.

Some of the tasks and functions involved in data entry jobs are copying, organizing, categorizing, or entering information into databases.

Modern AI systems can extract information from invoices, emails, PDFs, forms, and documents and place it directly into business systems.

WHAT THIS MEANS:

This shows that one employee equipped with AI can accomplish what previously required several people.

This means companies no longer need as many employees to perform the same volume of administrative work.

Administrative assistants and executive secretaries

Administrative assistants' and executive secretaries’ tasks and functions may involve routine, repetitive work such as scheduling meetings, writing routine emails, organizing documents, preparing summaries, and managing calendars.

Already, generative AI (GenAI) can do a lot of these jobs, such as:

~ Drafting emails

~ Scheduling meetings

~ Producing transcripts and summaries of meetings

Etc.

WHAT IS HAPPENING

The ‘World Economic Forum (WEF), The Future of Jobs Report 2025,’ highlighted that clerical and secretarial workers such as administrative assistants and executive secretaries, cashiers and ticket clerks, “… are expected to see the largest decline in absolute numbers.”

WHAT THIS MEANS:

This shows that traditional administrative roles are changing.

Instead of spending hours arranging meetings or creating documents, a smaller number of employees can use AI to get the job done while focusing on higher-value tasks and functions.

The future administrative worker may not disappear. However, the job description is changing.

Translators and language workers

Translation services were once considered a highly specialized human skill.

Today, AI translation can do many things and produce results almost instantly at a much lower cost.

WHAT IS HAPPENING

DUOLINGO

An article by TechCrunch titled ‘Duolingo cuts 10% of its contractor workforce as the company embraces AI,’ January 9, 2024, by Lauren Forristal, stated that Duolingo confirmed reducing ten percent (10%) of its contractor workforce at the end of 2023.

This move was in line with the use of AI models like OpenAI’s GPT-4 to streamline content production and translation.

Duolingo is considered the world’s most popular educational platform and mobile app for learning languages.

REPORT

The ‘World Economic Forum (WEF), The Future of Jobs Report 2023,’ highlighted that twenty-three percent (23%) “… of jobs are expected to change by 2027, with 69 million new jobs created and 83 million eliminated…”

WHAT THIS MEANS:

This shows that fewer people may be required for language learning and translation services, especially for basic translation.

However, human translators, employees, and workers are still relevant as it relates to:

~ Validating output quality and ensuring it is in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

~ Providing human expertise as it pertains to legal documents, medical communication, literary translation, cultural nuance, and sensitive information.

The translator of the future may spend less time translating every sentence and more time editing, validating, and managing AI-generated translations.

Graphic designers

Generative AI (GenAI) has fundamentally changed the economics of visual content.

Instead of hiring a designer to create dozens of initial concepts, businesses can generate hundreds of images within minutes using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI).

WHAT IS HAPPENING

KLARNA

On May 28, 2024, in Stockholm, Sweden, Klarna announced that its marketing agency expenditure was cut by twenty-five percent (25%) because of artificial intelligence (AI).

AI also helped Klarna run more promotional campaigns.

Klarna is an AI-powered, global payments network and shopping assistant.

Klarna also stated that “AI is responsible for 37% of the cost savings…”

By using generative AI (GenAI) tools like Midjourney, DALL-E, Firefly, Topaz Gigapixel, and Photoroom Klarna was able to save “… $1.5 million in the first quarter of 2024 alone.”

Image development was also reduced from 6 weeks to 7 days because of the use of AI.

REPORT

The ‘World Economic Forum (WEF), The Future of Jobs Report 2023,’ had graphic design as a moderately growing job.

However, the ‘World Economic Forum (WEF), The Future of Jobs Report 2025,’ reported graphic design as a declining job.

WHAT THIS MEANS:

This doesn’t mean professional designers are going to vanish.

One reason graphic designers may still be relevant is that brand strategy, art direction, UX design, and creative leadership are difficult to automate completely.

Nevertheless, the market for simple social media graphics, advertising variations, product images, and basic visual concepts is being transformed by AI.

Copywriters and content writers

The work that copywriters and content writers do is being transformed by AI as AI is already generating blog posts, product descriptions, email campaigns, social media captions and advertising variations in seconds.

WHAT IS HAPPENING

Companies like Klarna use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to create marketing materials at scale.

Klarna has reported that AI contributed significantly to reductions in its sales and marketing costs while allowing the company to increase the number of campaigns it produced.

WHAT THIS MEANS:

This means that copywriters and content writers who primarily produce formulaic content will have less work to do as AI takes over those tasks.

Copywriters and content writers will still be needed for high-quality journalism, investigative writing, brand storytelling, expert analysis, and original creative work.

Even though AI can produce the first draft, it is humans who decide if that draft is worth publishing.

Cashiers and ticket clerks

Cashiers’ and ticket clerks’ jobs, tasks, and functions were already affected by self-checkout and digital payments.

AI is accelerating the broader trend toward automated transactions.

WHAT IS HAPPENING

The ‘World Economic Forum (WEF), The Future of Jobs Report 2025,’ reported that cashiers and ticket clerks are among the fastest-declining occupations through 2030.

Retailers increasingly use self-service kiosks, automated checkout systems, mobile ordering, and AI-powered customer service technology.

This means that the jobs, tasks, and functions performed by cashiers and ticket clerks are being replaced by an ecosystem of software and self-service technologies, including robotics, digital payments, and e-commerce.

Additionally, changes in human behavior, with many now making cashless transactions, are advancing these changes.

Bank tellers and routine banking staff

Banking has been automating routine transactions for decades through ATMs and online banking.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is being used to automate more complicated customer interactions, fraud detection, document processing and financial workflows.

PNB

According to the Reuters article titled ‘India’s PNB hikes cybersecurity spend as AI models including Anthropic’s Mythos raise risks’ May 5, 2026, by Nishit Navin and Ashwin Manikandan, India’s Punjab National Bank, India’s third largest state-run lender by market capitalization, will be placing more investments in cybersecurity and technology to protect against digital scams and fraud from advanced AI models.

AXIS

On May 7, 2026, Axis Bank, one of the largest private banks in India, announced the use of an AI-powered ReKYC solution and a Digital Business Profile Update Service to deliver faster, more accurate compliance.

This move was made to simplify and reduce the time required for regulatory processes.

According to an India Times article titled ‘Axis Bank expects AI to drive meaningful bottom line impact over next 18-24 months: CEO Amitabh Chaudhry’, Axis Bank is increasingly automating routine operational processes.

WHAT THIS MEANS:

This means that banks may require fewer employees while relying heavily on AI systems behind the scenes.

Accountants, bookkeepers and routine financial clerks

Routine accounting work is becoming increasingly automated.

Already, AI-powered software can categorize transactions, reconcile accounts, extract information from invoices, identify anomalies, and prepare preliminary financial reports.

WHAT IS HAPPENING

The ‘World Economic Forum (WEF), The Future of Jobs Report 2025,’ reported that accountants and auditors are among jobs expected to decline alongside other clerical occupations.

WHAT THIS MEANS:

This means that AI can process many transactions quickly, but businesses still need humans for financial judgment, regulatory interpretation, strategic planning, auditing, and accountability.

Therefore, accountants, bookkeepers and routine financial clerks who perform manual data entry and reconciliation may be vulnerable.

However, those who understand business strategy and can use AI to analyze complex financial information will remain relevant.

Entry-level research and legal work

There was a time when many believed that jobs requiring highly educated individuals would be safe from automation.

However, with AI capable of searching large document collections, summarizing information, comparing contracts, identifying patterns, and producing first drafts, highly educated careers are being transformed.

The ‘World Economic Forum (WEF), The Future of Jobs Report 2025,’ reported that AI can perform more than half of the tasks of market research analysts, while the exposure is lower for managers.

According to a Reuters article titled ‘Entry-level hiring at large US law firms declined for the first time in a decade, data shows’ August 5, 2026, by Karen Sloan, the number of entry-level lawyers hired by the biggest law firms in the United States of America (USA) declined in 2025 for the first time in more than a decade.

NALP

The National Association for Law Placement’s (NALP) report – ‘Jobs and JDs, Employment for the Class of 2025, Selected Findings’ highlighted that the law firms of more than 500 lawyers saw a decrease from 34.2% of the Class of 2024 to 33.2% of the Class of 2025 that were hired.

The NALP report was led by Nikia L. Gray, executive director, and Danielle A. Taylor, director of research and chief data strategist.

THOMSON REUTERS

Thomson Reuters stated it was investing over $200 million annually to have AI be part of its products – from Westlaw to CoCounsel.

This investment is intended to make its tools faster, smarter, and more predictive.

WHAT THIS MEANS:

This means that AI is changing the traditional career ladder.

Fewer junior workers are being hired for routine tasks.

There is also demand for people capable of supervising AI and handling complex judgment.
