Canada's New Social Media Platform ‘Gander’ Set to Launch in the Creator Economy
BY Leroy A. Brown
Following concerns about trolls, disinformation, and negative experiences on other social media platforms, Ben Waldman and others decided to take action.
They chose to create their own social media app.
This app was not only going to be different from what already exists.
This digital technology will be made by Canadians for Canadians.
As such, the team established Gander, of which Ben Waldman is the co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO).
According to The Globe and Mail’s article ‘Canadian social platform Gander to launch this fall’ by Pippa Norman and Sean Silcoff, June 23, 2025, Gander is built on AT Protocol just like the social media platform Bluesky.
The AT Protocol (Authenticated Transfer Protocol), developed by Bluesky Social PBC, was designed to be open and allow users to have unprecedented control over their data and interactions, ensuring a secure and private experience on Gander.
As such, Gander is a decentralized network.
The Gander social media platform allows written and video posts.
Cloud-service company ThinkOn will provide the network that Gander will use.
Because foreign cloud providers are subject to the regulations in their respective countries, having a local Canadian provider allows for greater control over privacy and moderation, with adherence to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Some of the advisers and investors of the Gander social media platform are:
~ Arlene Dickinson, Dragon’s Den TV star, founder, and general partner at District Capital Ventures
~ Blaine Cook, software engineer and former lead developer of social media site Twitter (now X)
~ Taylor Owen, at McGill University, is the founding director of The Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy, Beaverbrook Chair in Media, Ethics and Communications, associate professor in the Max Bell School of Public Policy, fellow at the Public Policy Forum, member of the Governing Council of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and host of CIGI Big Tech podcast
~ Peter Dinsdale, CEO of YMCA Canada and former CEO of the Assembly of First Nations, and past executive director of the National Association of Friendship Centres
~ Amber Mac, President of AmberMac Media Inc., tech journalist, and media personality, hosts the podcasts - The AmberMac Show podcast with co-host Jeff MacArthur and The Feed with co-host Michael B on SiriusXM
Over 9,000 people have signed up since allowing early access in April 2025.
At the launch in the fall, the Gander app will be available in French, English, and three (3) indigenous languages, ensuring that all Canadians can feel included and catered to.
GoConfirm, based in Toronto, will offer digital ID verification services.
