How to Change Your Mindset and Turn Your Passion Into a Business or Side Income
BY Leroy A Brown
The world we live in today is brimming with more opportunities than ever before, waiting for you to seize them.
It's not just a dream, but a tangible reality.
Turning your passion, interest, hobby, or what you love into a profitable business or extra income is within your reach.
Whether you love baking, cutting your grass, graphic designing, gardening, fitness, farming, taking care of pets, driving seniors, repairing cars, playing the guitar, photography, or any other hobby, your passion can become a powerful vehicle for financial growth.
And with the creator economy exploding, more opportunities are popping up.
Just like everything you see around you today—cars, houses, planes, businesses, and more—everything, including staying healthy physically and mentally, starts with the power of your mind.
How to have the mindset to achieve anything you want in life
There is a saying that says “money follows assets”.
Thus, money follows what you create or have.
Robert Kiyosaki, in his books, defines assets as anything that pays you.
This means that assets are not just possessions, but things that can generate income, enlightening you about their true nature.
However, before you can have the assets, other things are required to achieve them.
These include financial literacy, a solid investment strategy, and the discipline to save and invest regularly.
Dr. Myron Golden, a famous YouTuber with over 1 million subscribers, and who teaches business using biblical principles, has even outlined a simple equation to have assets as follows:
Mindset + Skillset + Toolset ----> Assets
I interpret the equation as follows:
First
MINDSET
When you have the mindset, you will know the skillset required
Then
SKILLSET
When you have the skillset required, you will know the tools needed
Then
TOOLSET
When you have the toolset required, you will create or have the assets
Then
ASSETS
You receive income as the assets make money
I define mindset as focus without distraction.
I define skillset as the things you need to do.
I define toolset as the things that will help you to do what is required.
I define assets as the things that are going to pay you.
Since your mindset is focus without distraction, it is important to know what to focus on.
Many people spend a lot of time, energy, and money on things that are not relevant at that moment.
For example, if you start a business, you may begin by printing logos, renting office space, hiring employees, etc., instead of concentrating on getting that first sale and start bringing in revenue.
Getting purchases for your products or service is important because it tells you if there is market demand (i.e., there are people willing to buy) for what you are offering.
Also, if no money is coming in, you have no business.
So, how do you know what to focus on.
You know what to pay attention to when you have wisdom.
According to the Bible, (I am paraphrasing, and I am no Bible scholar, so please bear with me), when God asked King Solomon what he wanted, instead of riches, etc., he asked for wisdom.
And after getting wisdom, King Solomon was blessed with everything else.
This symbolism is powerful as it shows that with wisdom comes everything else.
So, wisdom is what you need to have the mindset to achieve anything in life, such as turning your passion into a profitable enterprise or side income and exploring the creator economy.
So, how do you get this wisdom in addition to asking God?
Here are four (4) steps I have realized need to be taken to have the wisdom and ultimately the mindset to achieve anything you want in life:
Step1
IGNORANCE
Ignorance is you not knowing.
It is important to be comfortable with the idea that you do not know.
And it is because you don’t know, you are now going to search for the information.
You can search for the details in various ways such as:
~ Reading articles, books, etc.
~ Attending seminars, webinars, workshops, etc.
~ Doing courses
~ Using artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek
~ Reading the scriptures like the Bible, Kitab-i-iqan, and the Quran
~ Using search engines like Google, DuckDuckGo, etc.
~ Watching and listening to videos, podcasts, etc.
Step 2
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge is having the information.
So, after searching for what you are looking for, you now have the knowledge.
It is important to have the information that is going to be useful to you.
For example, doing a cooking course is not going to make you an auto mechanic.
You also need to organize the data you have so it makes sense to you, and you can evaluate and analyze it.
Step 3
UNDERSTANDING
Understanding is where you comprehend the data you have and can connect it to your purpose.
Knowing what you have read and listened to is important because you cannot do what you are not aware of.
Step 4
WISDOM
You gain wisdom when you apply what you have learnt.
After searching, collecting, and grasping the information, you now need to act.
Having the required mindset will lead you on the path of achieving your goals and dreams such as:
~ Becoming the best version of yourself
~ Turning your passion into a profitable business or side income
~ Making money online
~ Being a creator in the creator economy
~ Being debt free
~ Becoming a multimillionaire
~ Traveling the world
Etc.
The mindset shift to turn your passion into a profitable business and side income, and exploring the creator economy
Below are components of the mindset shift that are in addition to the above, and are more specific to turning your passion into a profitable business or side income, as well as you taking advantage of the opportunities in the creator economy:
1
BELIEF
(a)
Believe you have something beneficial to share
It is necessary to believe in the value of what you are doing, such as your passion, hobby, interest, or what you love.
It is not unusual to think that more well-known skills like accounting, coding, engineering, medicine, and law are the areas that generate income.
But the truth is, we are in a world today where people are willing to pay for almost anything that adds value to their lives.
For example, there are bank executives who love cooking and are willing to pay to learn to make different dishes.
The answers to the following questions can help you create more value for your targeted audience:
~ Does my passion solve a problem?
~ Will my interest entertain, inspire, or educate my potential customers?
~ Does what I love improves the life of others, even in a small way?
Whether you answer yes or no to any or all of the above questions, you can design the way you share your passion with others, so your potential customers can benefit from it.
For example, if you love to cook, you can show how to cook a nutritious balanced meal in 15 minutes or less.
This way, it is not just cooking a meal, but it is targeting those who are health-conscious.
(b)
Believe you have it now
Believing you have it now is a biblical and law of attraction principle where you believe what you want is already here.
Thinking like this helps you to overcome doubt and encourages you to do the things that will allow you to have what you desire.
(c)
Start seeing yourself as the person you want to be
Are you solving problems, entertaining, educating, or inspiring people?
Whichever you are doing, that is how you’ll be recognized as.
And because you are creating something whether its videos, blogs, audio, being a speaker, etc., you are a creator.
Thus, you should adopt the identity of a creator.
Part of being a creator is seeing yourself based on how you are presenting what you love such a storyteller, educator, entertainer, or problem solver.
(d)
Shift from hobbyist to entrepreneur
As you identify as a creator, you will eventually operate as an entrepreneur if you want to have consistent income.
Moving from passion to business may be difficult for you because you do what you love when you want to, how you want to, and for personal joy.
While as an entrepreneur, you are sharing your interest with others and receiving income.
Being successful in making money means conducting tasks even when you don’t feel like it.
The answers to these questions can assist you in transitioning from someone who is just doing a hobby to growing a profitable business or side income:
~ Who are you selling to, i.e., your ideal customer or target audience?
~ What problem are you solving for your potential customer?
~ How can you package your passion in a way that will attract your target audience?
As a hobbyist you create as you are inspired.
However, as an entrepreneur, you create with purpose, direction, and value in mind.
Overall, your belief in the value of your passion will help you to turn your hobby into income and explore the opportunities in the creator economy.
2
Think long-term
As you develop wisdom, a lot of what you do will take time.
The results you seek may take a while and everything may appear to be going slow.
Nevertheless, keep going forward because your best outcomes will normally occur later rather than immediate.
Additionally, your personal and entrepreneurial advancement is usually gradual.
And don’t get caught up with being perfect.
Strive for consistency, as this is how you build and keep momentum.
3
Develop a growth mindset
Growth mindset is part of your overall mindset.
Developing a growth mindset simply means you are learning as you go along.
You learn from both your wins and failures.
It is no secret that as you are building something, you will encounter challenges.
Thus, when creating your profitable business or side hustle around your passion, you will have obstacles.
Having a growth mindset helps you to gain an understanding of the situation and you adapt or change as is necessary.
4
Commerce
(a)
Develop business skills
Your creative skills will produce the products or services.
However, your entrepreneurial skills are what will sell your products or services and build an enterprise or side income.
As you turn your passion into profit, you will be learning different skills such as marketing, sales, branding, bookkeeping, customer service, logistics, etc.
And as you become a creator, you may progress into other abilities such as:
~ Digital marketing which may include content and social media marketing
~ Search engine optimization (SEO) and establishing your channel which may include having a presence on social media platforms, blogging, etc.
~ Email marketing which may include building your email list
~ Pricing strategies
~ Time management
You will not be great at executing every task, but some you will, as you embrace lifelong learning and skills stocking.
(b)
Learn to iterate
You will iterate, experiment, adjust, or change plans as is necessary.
Repeating is essential as you realize trends, discover better ways to do something, and so on.
5
Develop consistency and discipline
To have the mindset for business success requires action.
And to continually perform requires consistency and discipline.
Your passion will assist you to be creative.
While it is discipline and steadfastness that is going to steer you towards the results you desire.
I define disciple as the ability to stick to a plan that will benefit you.
And I define consistency as repeating an action that will benefit you.
So, you may be asking, what about motivation?
I define motivation as the inner drive to get going.
Motivation gets you started, and discipline keeps you on track.
Consistency is what makes you better, create momentum, and drives you towards your goals.
Developing consistency and discipline may include:
~ Setting working hours
~ Scheduling content creation
~ Creating a routine
~ Developing products
~ Engaging with customers
Being consistent also means you are showing up and being visible.
And as people continue to see you, your work, and your content, they begin to trust you.
It is this trust that you create with your target audience that leads to sales, referrals, and growth.
6
Embrace imperfection and take action
One hurdle you may face is overcoming fear in business.
Do not get stuck in planning mode.
You will not know everything before you begin.
You will not always be able to fix or prepare for every problem.
However, once you know enough go ahead and start.
It is the implementation process that lets you know what works and what does not.
7
Be customer-focused
One of the setbacks you may encounter in your passion-based business strategy is that you may be consumed by what you do, your interest, and what you love.
This kind of over concentration may let you believe that because you love what you are doing so much, or you believe in it a lot, you think others should.
Your customers let you know if something is worthwhile by their purchases.
Let us not get this twisted though.
Loving what you do is crucial as it helps to overcome challenges.
However, successful businesses focus on customers first.
Your passion becomes profitable when you align it with the needs, desires, and goals of your target market.
To help you to align your hobby, interest, or what you love with your potential customers’ wants and needs, you may need to do market research, receive feedback from your target audience, and have empathy for your followers.
Additionally, the answers to the following questions may assist you in ensuring your interest is aligned with your potential buyers:
~ What does your target audience need?
~ How can you adapt your passion to meet those needs?
~ How can you communicate the benefits clearly?
Just to reenforce the point being made – be customer focused, not just passion-focused.
8
Be resilient
Being resilience can help you to be comfortable sharing unfinished ideas and receiving feedback and criticism.
There will be moments when you have low sales, people will find fault with everything, and nothing will go according to your plans.
It is your flexibility that will help you to get through bad times.
You will always face obstacles, criticisms, and rejections.
What makes you successful regardless of your circumstances is your decision to keep moving forward.
9
See yourself successful
Building a profitable side hustle is no joke.
It takes action, discipline, diligence, intention, and consistency.
When you see yourself success, it motivates you to do what is required to achieve your desires.
